• 9:00 am Lookouts, Limestone, and the Lion’s Head (9:00 am, ~7km): Bus hike, 8:30 departure from Ferndale Visitor’s Center. Join us for a memorable hike through Lion’s Head Provincial Park to the iconic Lion’s Head Lookout, one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula. This route follows forested trails and rugged sections of the Niagara Escarpment. We’ll take a moment to visit the Giant’s Cauldron Side Trail and Lion’s Head Pothole Side Trail along the way. Our destination, Lion’s Head Lookout, rewards hikers with panoramic views of the turquoise waters below, the surrounding cliffs, and the iconic Lion’s Head rock formation. Expect uneven, rocky terrain, exposed cliffside sections, and plenty of opportunities to pause for photos and take in one of the Bruce Peninsula’s most unforgettable landscapes. Sturdy hiking footwear, water, snacks, weather-appropriate layers, and a camera are strongly recommended.
• At the Edge: Boundary Bluffs Experience – Interpretative hike (1:00pm, ~5-6km): Explore the boundaries of both the Sydney Bay Bluff and the territory of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. Located close to the iconic Cape Croker Park this hike traverses the sheltered fall canopies of the forests and the dramatic cliffs and stunning vistas of the Niagara Escarpment. The edges and boundaries offer us insights into many unique environments and the resilient adaptations that are needed to survive on the edge. As well, the man-made boundaries between the Chippewas of Nawash and the rest of Canada offer an important opportunity to reflect on the political histories between these two people and how it has shaped the land we get to explore today. It is only through understanding these boundaries and learning to work from both sides of it that we can continue to protect these beautiful places.
• Deepening Our Connections: An Interpretative Hike Along Jones Bluff (1:00 pm, ~8km): Join us for an immersive interpretive hike through the beautiful Jones Bluff area in Neyaashiinigmiing. This walk invites participants to explore the land through the lenses of Indigenous knowledge-intertwining natural history, personal story, and community connection. Together, we’ll consider how we relate to land and how land relates to us. During this exploration you will learn about the traditional plants and wildlife that play a pivotal role in the traditional and contemporary lives of the Anishinaabek people. Expect pauses for discussion, questions, and quiet observation as we deepen our connection to this powerful and storied landscape.
