Two New Friendship Trails open
As part of our 50th Anniversary Milestones celebrations the BTC is establishing Friendship Trails in each of the Club sections.
Following the opening of the Jeju Olle Friendship Trail in September 2011, we are pleased to announce two new Friendship Trails in the Sydenham and Peninsula Sections of the Bruce Trail.
The September 22, 2012 opening of the Lebanon Mountain Trail-Bruce Trail Friendship Trail at the Bayview Escarpment Nature Reserve (Sydenham Section) was a great success. 30 people came together to celebrate the twinning of the two trails and the cooperation of the Lebanon Mountain Trail (LMT) Association and the BTC. Francis Richardson, Mayor of Meaford, and Bill Walker, MPP of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, said a few words of welcome and appreciation of the Bruce Trail. Frank Schoenhoeffer, President of the Sydenham Bruce Trail Club, spoke about the Friendship Trail program and the importance of the program to promote hiking and footpaths internationally. Through brief periods of rain and sun, hikers completed either the short or long route of the Friendship Trail.
The twinned portion of this Friendship Trail in Lebanon opened on November 10, 2012, in Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve, in the presence of HE Mrs. Hilary Childs-Adams, the Ambassador of Canada to Lebanon. The Bruce Trail portion of the LMT can be found in its Section 6 (Ehden to Wadi Qannoubine). This is the only section on the LMT where you will find a maple tree! It also contains one nature reserve (Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve) and a World Heritage Site (Kadisha Valley WHS).
The Cotswold Way - Bruce Trail Friendship Trail opened on September 29, 2012 at Lion's Head in the Peninsula Section. Again there were about 30 people who came together to celebrate the twinning of these two trails and organizations. Words of welcome and encouragement were brought by BTC Executive Director Beth Kümmling, Mayor Milt McIver of the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula, local Councillor Tom Boyle, and Lisa Greig from Bruce County Tourism.
The opening of the Bruce Trail Friendship Trail on the Cotswold Way will take place within the next year.
What is a Friendship Trail?
The Bruce Trail Conservancy has so far connected with three international trail organizations to raise awareness of and support for public footpaths through the creation of Friendship Trails. In each case, a route on existing Bruce Trail (main and side trails) and a corresponding route on the international trail have been designated as a Friendship Trail, displaying special signs to mark the partnership.
