A series of guided geology hikes
in support of the Bruce Trail Conservancy

Since it began in September 2003, the "Geology 101 on Foot" series has raised almost $50,000 to support the Bruce Trail Conservancy's mission to secure and steward a Conservation Corridor on the Niagara Escarpment.

This popular hike series continues this Spring.

If you have an interest in learning about geology, and an enthusiasm for the Niagara Escarpment and its protection, why don't you join us?

The Spring 2012 Geology Hikes are now completely booked. Watch this space for a fall series, to be posted in August.

 Niagara Escarpment

Advanced registration by phone or email is mandatory. A "tuition fee" in the form of a donation to The Bruce Trail Conservancy will be collected on each hike.
(Donations of $10 or more receive a tax receipt).

Geology Hikes - Spring 2012

Mono Cliffs and Splitrock Narrows (~ 7 km) **NEW**
Sunday, April 22, 2012 - 10:00 am ***FULL***

Missed this hike?  You can still explore Splitrock Narrows on April 22. Click here for details >>

A new twist in the Mono Cliffs area. We'll start at the Provincial Park and take a new route for a geological exploration of the new Splitrock Narrows Property. You'll be among the first hikers to explore this new acquisition for the BTC, closing the end of May 2012.

All donations from the Spring 2012 hike series will go towards acquisition of this property. See impressive outliers, steep cliffs, long views, a glacial spillway, and the impressive crevice system for which Splitrock Narrows is named.

Slipping Through the Cracks - The Kolopore/Mitchell Creek Valley (10 km)
Sunday, May 13, 2012 - 10:00 am ***FULL***

This is a favourite that never gets old! We'll loop through the beautiful Kolopore / Mitchell Creek Valley of the Beaver Valley section, taking in the cracks and crevices of Duncan Crevice Caves and Metcalfe Rock, and crossing the now-famous Mill Creek Bridge. If the timing is right, we'll catch one of the most spectacular displays of trilliums on the Trail!

A Weekend on the Bruce Part 1 - Cape Dundas "Cove to Cove" (6.5 km)
Saturday, May 19, 2012 - 11:00am
***FULL***

We'll trek from the heights above Jackson's Cove, down through four distinct rock layers, along the shoreline of Cape Dundas, and end our day at the beautiful Chris Walker Nature Reserve at Rush Cove. Geology hikers will be rewarded with towering clifftop views, fossils, alvars, cobble beach ridges, and the beautiful shoreline of Georgian Bay.

A Weekend on the Bruce Part 2 - Lion's Head (8 km)
Sunday, May 20, 2012 - 10:00am
***FULL***

Another old favourite, and undeniably one of the most beautiful parts of the Bruce Trail! We'll hike the rugged trails of Lion's Head and McKay's Harbour on the Bruce Peninsula. Magnificent geology and scenery are guaranteed, as well as a glimpse of the oldest trees east of the Rocky Mountains.

Terra Cotta and Silver Creek (~ 8 km)
Sunday, June 3, 2012 - 10:00 am
  **FULL**

On this new geology hike we'll see some of the industrial history of the area including quarries and brickworks, wander through a dense hardwood forest, and explore the fern-filled rocks of the Escarpment.
